What is TEXTURED hair?

Posted by Valerie Dormeus on 17th Mar 2024

In the recent past, I have seen posts, comments, and blog posts online differentiating textured hair from wavy hair, and curly hair (basically, looser curls). I have also been receiving inquiries from customers wanting products for curly hair specifically, and not textured hair. This differentiation started in the recent past (in the last few years). It is not only incorrect and misleading, it is divisive. I have been wearing my natural hair for 20 years, and as the founder of the first online boutique in Quebec specialized in textured hair care, I felt compelled to write this post.

For those who do not know, the ''natural hair movement'' as it was called at the time, was pioneered by the black community in the US. I got to learn from wonderful creatives on how to care for my natural hair in the early 2000s. I still learn from this community to this day, as they tend to be a few steps ahead (understandably so). This also explains why most of the hair care brands we carry in the boutique, are black-owned US brands.

The natural hair movement in the US has inspired not only natural hair care brands for textured hair to see the light of day, they have also inspired all communities to embrace their natural hair/textured hair. It brings me great joy that today, all textured hair types get to learn, love and lean into their heritage when it comes to caring for their natural hair.

Textured hair does not mean afro hair. Afro hair or Coily/kinky-curly hair, are tight curls (highly textured curls), just like wavy hair are loose curls (yes they are curls that are simply lightly textured). Textured hair simply means that the hair has texture meaning, it is not straight. In other words, the hair has a natural pattern. There is no need to redefine a word that is very clear, and means exactly what it says.

At Love Thy HnS, we bring the textured hair community together. One love, under one umbrella (textured hair care), which encompasses Curls of ALL textures (curly, wavy, afro/coily/kinky-curly).

Love,
Val
